Buying Molly Fish Wholesale: What to Check Before You Order
When you buy molly fish from a distant farm, the hardest part is rarely choosing between Sanke, Sakura and Platinum. It is knowing whether the fish you receive will come from the lot you saw, how that lot will travel and what happens if some fish do not survive the journey.
No farm can remove every risk from a live-fish shipment. A straightforward seller, however, will show you which lot is being offered and put the agreed terms in writing. Do not wait until you open the box to start asking questions.
Start with the exact lot you are considering
A polished photo can help you identify a strain. It cannot show you what the fish in the tank look like today.
Ask the farm for a clear video of the actual lot being offered. You should be able to see body shape, colour, fins, swimming behaviour and the overall condition of the group. If your order calls for a particular size or sex ratio, ask the farm to confirm those details against the same lot.
A video is still only a record of the fish at the time it was made. It cannot prove pedigree, line stability or how the fish will handle a journey. Ask when the video was recorded and whether it shows the same lot covered by the quote.
At VIET MOLLY, when a buyer asks about a particular strain, we check the fish on hand and photograph or film the actual fish. Older media may be used to introduce a strain, but it is not presented as evidence of a current lot unless we have checked that lot again.
The same strain name can mean different fish at different farms
Two farms may both offer Sanke molly fish, yet their fish can differ in body shape, colour, size and consistency. Familiar labels such as “selected,” “grade A” and “top grade” can also mean different things from one seller to another.
Do not stop at the strain name. State the strain, size and quantity you need, whether the sex ratio matters, and the traits you want the farm to select for. It is much easier to align expectations when both sides are looking at the same video.
At VIET MOLLY, “selected before packing” means that we check body shape, colour, fins and swimming behaviour, then hold back fish that are not suitable. This describes our selection step. It is not an “export grade” standard or an international quality certification.

The quote should identify the lot it covers
A number on its own is not a complete quote. Smaller fish, larger fish or a lot selected to different requirements may be priced differently.
The quote should state the strain, fish size and quantity it covers. If you have asked for a particular sex ratio, that should be recorded as well. Keep the per-fish price, date the lot was checked, any minimum quantity that applies to the order, and how the fish will be packed by bag or box in the same written record.
VIET MOLLY quotes per fish according to the strain, size and quantity required for each order. Because lots change over time, we check the fish on hand before quoting rather than publishing a fixed price list on the website.
Agree on the shipping responsibilities before confirming the order
Some buyers already have a route for receiving live fish; others need the farm to suggest an option. In either case, both sides should agree on the handover point: which part of the journey the farm arranges and which part the buyer arranges.
A website does not need to publish every route. Each order should still record who books the shipment, where the fish are handed over, what photos or video must be taken at handover, and who confirms any change to the schedule.
At VIET MOLLY, shipping is discussed separately for each order, based on the destination and how the buyer can receive the fish. We only confirm the shipping plan after checking what is workable for that order. We do not make the same shipping promise for every country.
If fish are dead on arrival, what will the agreement cover?
Hearing a seller say “we cover dead-on-arrival losses” is not enough. Ask exactly what counts, what you must photograph or film while opening the box, how quickly you need to report a loss, and how that loss will be handled.
In the live-fish trade, dead on arrival is commonly shortened to DOA. Sellers handle DOA in different ways. Some replace fish on a later order; others issue a credit or partial refund. Ask whether the calculation is based on the number of fish or their value, and whether it applies only to the fish or also to any shipping charge.
The point is not how reassuring the promise sounds. The point is whether the evidence requirements and agreed response are clear in writing before you pay.
VIET MOLLY covers fish that meet the published arrival conditions. Follow the arrival evidence steps, contact us within the reporting window agreed when the order was confirmed, and keep every bag sealed while recording the required continuous video. Once the evidence is verified, the buyer may choose a refund for the value of the eligible fish or credit for that same amount toward the next order. Shipping arrangements and the reporting window remain specific to each order.
Know where the fish were raised
Fish raised by the seller are not automatically better than fish offered by a responsible trader who sources from elsewhere. What matters is knowing where the lot came from and who will take responsibility if there is a problem.
Lots sourced from several places may differ from one purchase to the next. Fish raised by one farm will not be identical every time either. Wherever you buy, review the exact lot being offered rather than relying only on a farm name or an older video.
The strains shown on the VIET MOLLY website are raised by VIET MOLLY at our farm. When you enquire, we still check the current lot before filming the fish and preparing a quote.
Do not let impressive labels replace evidence
“Export grade,” “top grade” and “show grade” all sound convincing. Without clear criteria, they do not tell you how the fish were selected.
A straightforward description of body shape, fins, colour, size and the reasons fish may be held back is more useful than a string of impressive adjectives. The best reference remains a current video of the actual lot, checked against the details in the written quote.
A first message can be this simple
Hi, we are looking for about [quantity] [strain] molly fish at [size]. If you have a suitable lot, could you send a current video of the actual fish? Once we have reviewed them, please quote per fish and let us know the shipping options to [destination]. Before we confirm the order, we would also like to agree in writing on how any losses on arrival will be documented and handled.
That gives the farm enough information to check the right tank and film the right lot. The remaining details can follow after you have seen the fish, saving time for both sides.
Ask to see the fish available at VIET MOLLY
Send us the strain, quantity, preferred size, required sex ratio if any, and destination country. VIET MOLLY will check the fish on hand, send photos or video of the actual lot for your review, and then prepare a quote.
